MEDIA UPDATES FOR TRADE UNIONS

Seizing back the moment

The media and unions
TOO often, trade unions only attract media industry in times of dispute. So, to win more positive coverage, trade unions and trade union activists need to court media attention at other times – going to the media, rather than waiting for the media to come to you.

With changes to many journalists’ working circumstances following savage job cuts across the regional newspaper and broadcasting industries in the early 21st century, the time has never been better.

But knowing what do to and when, where, why and with whom and how remains crucial. That’s where Modus Operandi Communications come in.

We can work with union reps and regional officials individually or by providing media training and advice – with the latest perspective on the media from within the media and within trade unionism – specialising in local and regional coverage outside London.

Appearances matter
TODAY, more than ever, the media are at work: 24 hours a day everywhere in the world, radio and television stations are broadcasting to millions of people. Newspapers and magazines are still selling. The internet and social networking have added a further dimension to mass communication.

They need all the material they can get – knowing who to approach, when and how could put you and the organisation or people you represent in an entirely different light.

Appearances matter, but defining and refining what you want – or need – to say to the papers, online, on radio or television is equally vital.

  • Modus Operandi is running an Media Update Seminar for trade unionists on January 19, 2011, in Leeds.
